Business2Business Networking: The next B2B event will take place on Thursday, May 29, 2008 from 5:15 p.m.-6:15 p.m., at Turtle’s Sports Bar & Grill, 1720 Marie Drive (Behind Kroger).  At B2B, businesses sit across from one another, and, at the sound of the bell, one business has 2 minutes to pitch its business, the products and services it sells and what or who the business is looking for.  In exchange, the listening business provides 2 leads and takes 2 business cards to make direct referrals. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL
 

Take advantage of a scholarship opportunity through the American Society for Quality (ASQ).  This is a $500 scholarship that can be used for anything the student needs.  There are only a few requirements: 1. Applicant must be recommended by a current member of the Pennyrile ASQ Section 922; 2. Applicant must be a high school graduate; 3. Applicant must be pursuing a post-secondary degree or certificate program in any discipline; 4.Scholarships will relate to programs being pursued in the Scholarship Year defined as the period starting July 1st and ending June 30th of the following year. Applications are due by April 30th. Deployment Update: Currently, Fort Campbell has nearly 17,500 soldiers deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.  1,500 additional soldiers will deploy over the next six weeks. Soldiers are expected to begin returning home around November 2008 through June 2009.

 
Celebrate National Military Appreciation Month in May: The U.S. Congress has proclaimed May as National Military Appreciation Month.  On Friday, May 9, 2008 local elected officials will proclaim May as Military Appreciation Month in Hopkinsville-Oak Grove-Christian County.  Businesses and organizations are encouraged to visit www.hopkinsvillechamber.com to view ways to be involved and demonstrate your appreciation to the military during this special month.
 
 WORKFORCE/EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
 

CATS Support: The CATS (Commonwealth Accountability Testing System) testing window this year is April 21 through May 2. The Christian County Public Schools greatly appreciated your support efforts last year and ask that you demonstrate that support, again, this year. Some specific requests for your help have been made.  Crofton Elementary School needs volunteers for their Cougar festival prior to the beginning of testing, and several of the schools have requested that community members provide five-minute pep talks on testing mornings.  What a great way for you and your business to show support with just a small investment of your time.  Please contact Regan Huneycutt, CCPS Communications and Community Education Director, at regan.huneycutt@christian.kyschools.us to schedule your volunteer time or for more involvement ideas.

Project Playground: Kid Designed, Community Built: The playground building begins on April 30 and will continue through May 4.  To make this happen, volunteers are still needed needed.  There are three shifts each day, and opportunities are available for all ages and all skill levels. Live at the Alhambra performance Celebrates 80th Anniversary of Alhambra Theatre: Tonight, April 18, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Conductor Rick Benjamin and his Paragon Orchestra will play the original score to the silent film, The Mark of Zorro.  The Pennyroyal Arts Council, U.S. Bank, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Southern Arts Federation welcome the swashbuckling silent film classic.  The performance will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Alhambra Theatre's 1928 opening and mark the first silent film shown at the Alhambra in 80 years. Tickets are $20.00 for adults/$5.00 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the box office at 507 S. Main Street, Hopkinsville.

Nineteenth Annual Quilt Show: Through April 26, 2008, Pennyroyal Area Museum will feature its Nineteenth Annual Quilt Show.  The Museum welcomes the opportunity to include quilt owners or quilt makers who would like to participate in our annual show by temporarily loaning their quilts to the museum.  The participants may bring their quilts in during the first week of April and pick them up during the last week of April.  Quilts may be old or new. A Quilting Bee is  planned for Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  The Museum is located at 217 East 9th Street, downtown Hopkinsville.  Business hours are 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Saturday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  For further information, call 270-887-4270.

 

Hopkinsville Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball:  The Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the James E. Bruce Convention Center. Christian County Democratic Association's April Meeting:  The Christian County Democratic Association will meet at 6:00 p.m. on  Monday, April 21, 2008 at The Pioneer's, Inc., 904-A North Main Street.  Guest Speakers are Senator Joey Pendleton and State Representative John Tilley.  Everyone is invited.
 
Earth Day Celebration:  An Earth Day Celebration is being sponsored by Hopkinsville Electric System/EnergyNet, Holiday Inn/Hopkinsville, and Tennessee Valley Authority at Trail of Tears Commemorative Park on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Lunch will be provided.  For further information, contact Lynn Clark at 270-887-4213. 
 
The Pennyroyal Academy of Fine Arts Presents Festival of American Music: On Saturday, April 26, 2008 the Pennyroyal Academy of Fine Arts presents the Festival of American Music, directed by Jim DeFoe, with accompanist Anna DeFoe, at the Alhambra Theatre.  All American spirituals, jazz, and old favorites will be performed by the Pennyroyal Community Chorus.  There will also be special guest performers from the area. Tickets are $10.00 and available at the Depot or at the door.
 
Texas Hold'em Tournament: Hopkinsville-Christian County Jaycees are hosting a Texas Hold'em Tournament on April 26, 2008.  The tournament will be at the James E Bruce Convention Center from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Registration will be 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the day of the event.  Proceeds from this event will help support the many community service events the Jaycees host.  For more information, please call 270-985-6211. 
 
Derby Arts Festival:  On Saturday, May 3, 2008, The Hopkinsville Art Guild, in collaboration with the City of Hopkinsville, the Pennyrile Academy of Fine Arts, Christian County Extension 4-H program, White Drive Products, area schools and the Public Library, are hosting the first Derby Arts Festival.  The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Main Street and 9th and Bethel Streets.  For more information, please contact Henrietta Kemp at 270-886-3776 or hvkemp@yahoo.com.
 
Alpha Alternative Pregnancy Care Center Fundraising Banquet:  On Monday, May 5, 2008 Alpha Alternative Pregnancy Care Center will host their 17th annual fundraising banquet.  The theme for this year's banquet is "Paths of Life" and seating will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and the program beginning at 6:00 p.m.  There is no charge, however, reservations are required.  For more information or to make reservations, please call Paige Wilson at 270-885-3820 or email alphaalternative@bellsouth.net.
 
Community Brand Unveiling and Proclamation Ceremony:  Mark your calendars to join Mayor Kemp, Judge Steve Tribble and Chamber officials for the Community Brand Unveiling and Proclamation Ceremony at 12:00 noon on Monday, May 12, 2008. The event is sponsored by Bradford Square Mall. During the week, members of the branding committee will participate in several functions to distribute information and logo items pertaining to the new community brand.  
 
Dean Boggess Scholarship Offered:  The Dean Boggess Scholarship is being offered through the International Association of Administrative Professionals.  Requirements include: 1. Applicant must be a high school graduate from a Christian County school; 2. Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student at Hopkinsville Community College or Murray State University at Hopkinsville Campus; 3.
